The G Spot 002 – repost

Welcome to The G Spot – Number TWO!

Well, a couple of people (yes, both my listeners) didn’t think we’d ever get here, but we have.

So we’re back with much more music. All of the podsafe music this time comes courtesy of that very splendid site IODA promonet – details are given for each track. I hope you find something you like.

Nothing Personal – Ana Popovic
Ripsnorting electric blues – great guitar playing.
And like the man said – never take a pop at your friends unless there’s no glass in your house, or something. Of course it isn’t 2010 yet, but the next time May comes around, it will be. I did set out to get to the Charlotte Street Blues club at the north end of Soho (where she’s playing next May, in 2010) but I’m afraid a sushi restaurant got in the way and I never made it.

Say No More – Enrico Crivellaro
I love this track soooo much. Thank you Peter Clitheroe over at SuffolkAndCool for introducing me to it. There is a trend to compress rock and pop tracks so that psychologically they sound louder. This is all very well except that you get to a point where everything is louder than everything else and nothing is quiet or loud it just IS. This is called CTF – Compressed To F***. And it’s really sad because it means that the quiet buits are as loud as the loud bits and there can be no light or shade in a piece, and that makes for fatigued ears.

Joanne Shaw Taylor
Time Has Come – Blackest Day – Bones. All from her album White Sugar. I’m not allowed to play these – so don’t tell anyone but get out there and BUY HER MUSIC – she’s a great artist. You can hear the strains of Joe Bonamassa in some of her playing. Great stuff.

It Ain’t Over When It’s Over – Kelly Hunt
Videos on Youtube – you know you want to – just go! And she has the Dalai Lama among her friends on MySpace – now that IS cool.

Cryin Blind – Samuel James
This guy sounds like he should be 80 but he’s young and he’s very very good. Old style acoustic blues done properly.

What’s Wrong – Tenry Johns
The King Kong Rocker – find him at www.tenryjohns.com and on myspace - Nice suit…

Bad Seed – Kat Danser
Kat Danser plays a number of beautifully crafted songs on her album Somethin’ Familiar, and this is one of the slower ones. Find her at www.katdanser.com – she’s just brilliant.

I hope you find something you like here, let me know if you did.

See you next time!

The G Spot 002a

Consumed with remorse that I had let you down by not making it all the way to Charlotte Street Blues I returned yesterday only to be met by a sign that said “Private Function – sorry for any inconvenience”. Inconvenience? I had walked two miles to get there, so I walked two miles straight back again.

And treated myself to a sushi for my pains…

I would love to have been able to tell you how great it was, but I’m not sure when I’m going to be in a position to get there again.

Sorry Folks!

The G Spot 001

Welcome to The G Spot – Number ONE!!!

This is a micropodshow – or PodSpot – that is intended to be injected into other peoples’ pod shows to showcase all that is great about Blues music.

Hi – my name is Jeremy Gugenheim and I will be your host on The G Spot. I hope to play you some music you like, and hopefully some you haven’t heard before but you do want to hear again. If you do then go to the artist’s own web page and fill your boots – that is how they make their living after all.

Five Miles – The Verdict.
The lyric was written by me and the music by the guitar player and vocalist Daniel Wherret. Written in 2005 it appeared on our CD “Guilty”. The song is not a twelve bar, though it was written with every aspect of blues music fully plugged in. It is supposed to convey the confusion suffered after the breakdown of a relationship, not quite knowing if you want to be near or far. Sadly The Verdict no longer have a website, but you can contact me directly if you wish.

The Blues Rolls On – Elvin Bishop
Elvin Bishop has been playing since the mid fifties and his talent lights up the room for me. He has played with many  blues powerhouses, starting out with Paul Butterfield. There is some gorgeous harp playing here. Find him at www.elvinbishopmusic.com – there are 27 albums to choose from!!!

From St Denis – Trafic de Blues
A french band, quite large. Their website has gone but they have a good page on Jamendo at www.jamendo.com/en/artist/trafic.de.blues sadly all in french (sadly only if you can’t read french. If you can read french then it’s not sadly at all). Their music is lively and great to dance to. There are tracks that are a bit jazzy, a lot funky, but all with a foot in the blues.

Blues ain’t pretty – Janiva Magness
All the music I play is podsafe, except the music that isn’t. Janiva Magness is not podsafe so I can only put up short clips for review purposes. She is brilliant. Run – do not walk – to her website at www.janivamagness.com and buy everything. You will not be disappointed. Her story makes for pretty hard reading but she has been able to use her experience as a vehicle for her magnificent voice.

That’s it for this first edition. I hope you have heard something you like. Let me know if you did, or even if you didn’t – I can take it (I hope). I must thank Peter Clitheroe (www.suffolkandcool.com) and Pete Cogle (www.petecogle.com) for beating down every excuse I could come up with for not getting round to doing this. I also thank my friend Daniel Wherrett (www.danielwherrett.com) for providing some great guitar work on my backing music. I trust there are further collaborations on the way.

Enjoy and come back soon.

Merry Christmas!

Jeremy Gugenheim.
